Cuevas del Almanzora
Cuevas del Almanzora is one of the oldest of Almería’s towns with a rich history and a wonderful climate, promising more than 300 sunny days a year and a close proximity to beautiful beaches. Cuevas del Almanzora’s name comes from caves in the nearby hills where silver miners lived in the 19th century. Some of these caves have been well preserved and are well worth a visit. The discovery of silver brought prosperity and you can see evidence of this in the grand houses, avenues and churches in the town. As well as grand buildings, Cuevas del Almanzora also has everything you need for daily life, including shops, schools, bars, restaurants, a bank, supermarkets and a 24 hour medical centre. Every Tuesday and Thursday, people come from nearby villages to buy their fresh fruit, meat and vegetables at bargain prices from the street market set up in the Plaza Mayor which sets up under the shade of the old castle. The beaches at Villaricos and Vera are all close by. The main beach at Villaricos is an unspoilt golden sandy beach, which is popular with the locals but usually not too crowded. San Juan de los Terreros is extremely popular with the locals in the main summer months, but is definately one of the most beautiful along the coastline. When it gets too hot to sit on the beach, head for one of the many chiringuitos and spend a few hours sampling the local dishes in the shade of the afternoon. Clean and safe, Vera’s Blue Flag Las Marinas beach has its own promenade and excellent facilities. It’s also fully accessible for disabled people so that everyone can sunbathe and swim in the sea. Along the coast, Puerto del Reu beach has excellent facilities for everyone. It’s very busy throughout the summer so a good place for kids to make new friends. There’s a well established nudist beach here, Playazo de Vera. This is the oldest and longest naturist beach in Spain. It has excellent facilities for water sports and for disabled access.
