The area around Baza has had settlements since prehistoric times and it was here that the Dama de Baza (a statue of particular significance) was discovered on 22 July 1971. The original is in the museum in Madrid and a full size replica can be found in the departures lounge at Granada Airport.

Under Moorish rule the population of Baza grew to almost 50,000 and was an important frontier post along the border with Murcia. It was also one of the three most important cities in the Moorish 'Kingdom of Granada'.

On 4 December 1489, during the reconquest by the catholic Queen Isabella, the Spanish sovereigns took formal possession of the impregnable city of Baza after a very stubborn defense lasting seven months and known as 'the seige of Baza'.

There are diverse activities to be enjoyed in the region of Baza. Within the city are various monuments and Arabic baths to be explored, and the surrounding countryside offers the opportunity for hiking, mountain biking and paragliding. The remarkable lake of el Negratin offers beautiful scenery.

A market is held every Wednesday morning in the grounds of the old railway station.
